uTorrent, this excellent program to download files from the BitTorrent network includes a setup wizard that detects the speed of your Internet connection and adjusts the settings of the program accordingly.
This is a very useful function, however in some cases it is not sufficient to make the program to the maximum. If you want to “squeeze” your uTorrent to the end and you download files, you must manually adjust the settings of the software and run tests on the actual speed of your ADSL connection.
Are you willing to try and “tweak” a bit ‘? So here is how to increase the speed of uTorrent based on the properties of your Internet connection. Do not get jumps speed stratospheric, but of discrete improvements should be able to warn them.
Before seeing in detail how to increase the speed of uTorrent, you have to know what is the actual speed of your Internet connection in kylobytes. In this way, you can fine-tune the settings of the program and adapt to what are the capabilities of your ADSL line.
Then connected to the Internet site SpeedTest and click SETTINGS located at the top right. In the page that opens, set the value of kilobytes the drop down menu Measurement speed (located at bottom of page) and click first on SAVE to save your changes and then RUN A TEST SPEED to return to the home page of the service.
At this point, click START TEST and wait SpeedTest detect the actual speed of your Internet connection in both download and upload. The process takes a few seconds before riding but make sure you have closed all P2P programs and other applications that can be put under stress the connection (eg. Viewing of streaming content), otherwise you get the values “distorted”.
Once known the real value of your ADSL connection, to increase the speed of uTorrent you have to find out what are the parameters to be set in the program to allow it to download at full speed. To do this, you should entrust to Azureus Calculator, an online service that allows you to calculate it exactly the parameters for the connection to be used in Torrent client.
Then connected to the main page of the site and type in the text field located next to kilo Bytes / second upload of the value that you obtained in tests SpeedTes (eg. 83 kilo Bytes / second). You’ll see the values listed under the terms Recommanded for Tools -> Options -> Transfer and Recommanded for Tools -> Options -> Queue automatically change based on the number entered: those are the values that you must enter in uTorrent to maximize the performance of the program.
To set the values obtained in uTorrent Azureus Calculator, start the program and select the Settings item from the Options menu to access its control panel. In the window that opens, select the voice band from the sidebar on the left and fill in the various fields of the form according to this scheme:
Maximum speed of UL ===> value kB / s max upload speed of Azureus Calculator.
Maximum speed of DL ===> value kB / s max download speed of Azureus Calculator.
Maximum number of global connections ===> value Maximum number of connections globally Azureus Calculator.
Maximum number of connected peers per torrent ===> value Maximum number of connections per torrent Azureus Calculator.
Number of upload slots per torrent ===> value Max upload slots per torrent Azureus Calculator.
Now, click the Apply button to save the settings, select the item from the queue left sidebar and fill in the various fields of the form according to this scheme:
Maximum number of active torrents ===> value Max active torrents of Azureus Calculator.
Maximum number of active downloads ===> value Max simultaneous downloads Azureus Calculator.
Finally, click Apply and OK to save the settings and your uTorrent should be faster to download.
If you use a Mac, went into uTorrent preferences by selecting the appropriate item from the menu that is located on the top left. Then, in the window that opens, select the tab Banda and fill out the fields as seen previously for the Windows version of the program.
To set the number of connections for Torrent and queues, go BitTorrent tab and fill out the fields as seen a few lines further on when I told you about uTorrent for Windows.
As I explained in other posts dedicated to the topic, some providers impose filters that prevent traffic Torrent download at full speed even if the router and the client used to download are configured correctly. In these cases, you can increase the speed of uTorrent activating a feature called encryption protocol, which bypasses the restrictions allowing providers to maximize the speed of the connection.
To enable protocol encryption, you have to go in the Options menu> Settings uTorrent, BitTorrent select from the left sidebar and select Enabled from the drop down Outgoing. Click the OK button to save the settings and you’re done.
On the Mac, the same option can be activated by going to the menu uTorrent> Preferences, selecting the tab BitTorrent from the window that opens and putting a check mark next to the words referred to the function Enable Encryption output.
Remember, finally, always download torrent that have a high number of sources (seeds and peers). Without those, it is difficult to achieve download speeds significant. There are settings and “tricks” that would provide.
